Vitamin K: The underrated vitamin

Almost everyone has heard or read something about the B vitamins and vitamins C, E or D – in contrast to the underrated vitamin K . Although most vitamins have been researched more often, the vitamin has been relatively little researched compared to the others. One thing is certain, however: According to the current state of knowledge, it offers you numerous interesting advantages . You should therefore definitely get to know them.

What is vitamin K?

The vitamin belongs to the group of fat-soluble vitamins . These also include vitamins A, E and D. On the one hand, the vitamin itself is rather unknown, on the other hand, one effect is again very common – the formation of blood coagulation factors. For this reason, it is administered prophylactically to newborns, for example, in order to avoid cerebral hemorrhage.

Vitamin K1

Vitamin K1 (also Phylloquinone) is naturally present in some foods – mainly in green leafy vegetables . It is first metabolized in the liver, where it then forms blood clotting factors. Vitamin K1 is therefore also the form that is used for bleeding prophylaxis in newborns .

Vitamin K2

Vitamin K2 (menaquinone) – in contrast to the other vitamin forms – even partially made from animal or fermented foods by the intestinal bacteria and then transported to the blood vessel walls or other tissues close to the liver. Vitamin K2 takes on tissue-specific functions there. The body can only produce small amounts of vitamin K2 itself; this is not enough for a sufficient supply. Vitamin K3

Menadione (vitamin K3) is neither found in food nor is it formed by intestinal bacteria. It is a synthetically produced vitamin that is not exactly harmless as it even causes toxic side effects . That is why it is now banned for human consumption.

Vitamin K for strong bones

The following question has been a topic of discussion in science for a long time: Does the vitamin influence weight? Therefore, this question was investigated in a study with women aged 55–65 years. The result: a high dose of the vitamin actually reduced the body weight of women. In addition – in contrast to the women in the placebo group – the outer and inner abdominal fat was reduced.

Vitamin K in breast cancer

Vitamin K supplement

A deficiency in the vitamin is relatively rare, provided you are not constantly bruised, gastrointestinal bleeding or are a chronic alcoholic. It is much more important not to supplement the vitamin when taking Marcumar (anticoagulant), as it weakens the effect of the drug and in the worst case can lead to thrombosis.
